Viewer Expectation Poll

In a recent bulletin, Ofcom claimed that
The material shown was so strongly sexual that it would have exceeded the likely expectation of the
vast majority of the audience
One wonders where this evidence came from, but a poll conducted at babeshows.co.uk suggests otherwise, with a tiny 1% saying that the material exceeds their expectaions, and a not much bigger 6% claiming their expectaions are often met.

What would we expect from a poll in which all the voters are adult channel watchers, I hear you ask. But look again at Ofcom's claim
... the vast majority of the AUDIENCE"
And surley it is precisley the audience who should be asked?

  1. sad fact that nothing will ever change in this country i dont use phone line chat programs but if the girls are happy doing it then i dont see a problem what makes me laugh is the fact that if people do tune in then why do they complain dosent make sense if you dont want to watch it just turn the tv off or turn it over to another channel.

  2. They watch in the hope of being offended. Then they can justify (to themselves, at least) the inevitable complaint.

  3. Ofcom's justification for fining channels is that in many homes parental filters are not set, so children can access adult channels and adults who might be offended might type the wrong channel number.

Of course there is an easy solution, one that Ofcom consistently refuses to apply. Ship Sky boxes with adult channels locked out (and a leaflet explaining how Dad can unlock them in 30 seconds).

By refusing to insist on this Ofcom is CONTRIBUTING to any problems that occur because it has the power to force the issue. They might argue that many games consoles, phones and computers are shipped without controls either, and can be used to access strong internet content. Looks as if that might change:

    "[BBC]Call for Authomatic Phone Filters
Games consoles and mobiles should be sold with parental filters switched on to limit children's exposure to sexual imagery, a Home Office review says."

The study says that children are increasingly being exposed to material their parents do not know about.

(The report makes other recommendations that are over the top, but my point is about whether boxes are shipped with protection on or off).

  4. It's official.

Sky, Virgin Media, BT Vision, Tiscali, TopUp TV and Freesat have parental controls. Ofcom say so: Ofcom report, and yet they continue to insist that this doesn't give enough protection over Sky's adult channels.

  5. People have always looked at sex images and always will, including children and older people, priests and prudes. The Sexual Freedom Coalition was set up in 1996 to coordinate campaigns such as yours and campaign ourselves when nobody else would. So, how can we help? There is an old saying that the way to control your people is to control their sexuality, and this government is certainly going along that route. But we will not be controlled. Life is not a dress rehearsal.

  6. If you go and look at that poll, you see that there's a fairly even split between those who consider that these adult shows currently meet or exceed their expectations and those who consider that they rarely meet or never meet them. To all intents and purposes, it's a 50/50 split.

  7. Anon (28/2/10 19:06), the poll highlights the falsehood in Ofcom's statement that the content on Bangbabes was "So strongly sexual is likely exceeded the expectations of the vast majority of audience" (Bulletin 151). As you so rightly point out, its roughly a 50:50 split - so no vast majority either way. Further, as Ofcom received the typical one complaint, the vast majority of the audience clearly we not worried, offended, harmed or otherwise compelled to complain. That poll actually shows that whilst 20% of the audience are happy with the content (we presume with these breaches included), 59% feel it barely if ever meets their expectations (presumably if and when they breach Ofcom's Code).

  8. I'm pretty amazed that anyone has said that these shows ever meet or exceed their expectations - pretty low expectations tbh - but I suppose the meat of the question is in the word "expectation". It's fair to say that I expect to see some strong(ish) adult content in the adult content section of the EPG. However knowing the channels/OFCOM rulings and standards, I also expect to see bugger all. The question perhaps is not what we expect to see, but what we SHOULD expect to see, if that's not too confusing. I need a lie down now.
